About product

Balalaika 1:48

A scenic accessory for a diorama in 1:48 scale. It is not a part for a model but a stand-alone object of a scene, built and painted separately. The balalaika is a stringed instrument with a characteristic triangular body and a short neck, so it can be told from other instruments at first glance even in miniature. In a scene it works as a prop that gives figures something to do: as soon as somebody is holding an instrument, a group of figures stops looking like randomly placed statues and starts telling a story.

Field of use

The accessory suits off-duty and back-area scenes — figures sitting by a vehicle, on boxes, in an interior or in a rural composition. Quiet scenes are among the most rewarding subjects for dioramas, because they allow you to work with gestures and small objects. The 1:48 scale is common above all with aircraft models and with the figures that go with them, so the instrument suits scenes on airfield aprons as well as living quarters. The manufacturer also makes the same subject in further scales.

Building and painting tips

Small and thin objects in 1:48 scale call for careful cleaning up — use a sharp scalpel and fine abrasive paper and hold the instrument by the body, not by the neck. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts: cyanoacrylate super glue for resin and printed parts, modeling cement for plastic on injection-molded parts. After a filler primer, paint the body in a wooden shade and let it come out with a thin glaze that suggests the grain of the wood. It is usually a good idea to set the soundboard apart in a lighter tone than the sides. A fine wash will bring out the junction of the neck and the body, and a final semi-matte varnish will give the wood a natural look. Suggest the strings only if the scale will carry it — in 1:48 a dark line with a fine brush is often enough.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to give figures a prop and something to do
  • Makers of quiet and back-area scenes
  • More experienced builders — the object is small and thin

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A stringed musical instrument with a triangular body and a short neck. Thanks to its shape it is recognizable even in miniature.

It is a prop for figures. An instrument in the hands of a figure gives a scene action and turns a group of figures into a legible scene.

In 1:48 scale it is a very small and thin object, so it calls for careful cleaning up with a sharp scalpel and fine abrasive paper.

A base wooden shade, a thin glaze for the grain and a lighter tone on the soundboard. A final semi-matte varnish gives the surface a natural look.
