An extensive 1:48 sheet for a Belgian F-16 in a special tiger scheme. It is one of the most extensive items in the decal line, which matches the printed area.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Belgian fighter unit with a tiger in its badge is one of the most active members of the association of European tiger squadrons, and it prepares a specially sprayed machine for its annual gathering. While other countries stick to a colored fin, the Belgian schemes have a tradition of whole-airframe finishes that cover the fuselage from the nose to the exhaust nozzle as well as the entire underside of the wing.
It is precisely the extent that makes this scheme one of the more demanding projects that can be built in 1:48 scale without spraying masks. The artwork has to line up across edges and across removable panels, which means working with large pieces and watching that the film does not fold over while being moved. The reward is a model that works as a display piece in its own right in a case and needs no context around it.
The tiger gathering began at the start of the 1960s as an informal meeting of units that had a big cat in their badge, and it gradually grew into a large international event with training flights. It was the competition among the participants for the most striking coat that pushed the artistic solutions to where they are today: from a few stripes on the vertical tail to finishes that cover the whole machine, including the external fuel tanks.
Do not hurry with the matte varnish: across large areas of carrier film a difference in sheen shows at once if an air bubble is hiding underneath. Before application it is worth literally polishing the model. A Belgian Viper kit of your own is needed for the build; the package holds only the printed sheet.
