The Bell P-39 Airacobra was an American fighter with an unusual layout: the engine sat behind the pilot's cockpit and drove the propeller through a long shaft running under the cockpit floor. The pilot got in through side doors as in a car, and the machine had a nosewheel at a time when a tailwheel was the normal solution. A cannon was carried on the axis of the propeller hub. It made its mark mainly at low altitude, where it handled well against ground targets and in combat over the front line.

These are the small labels and warnings that are spread over the whole surface of the real machine: instructions by the filler points, warning labels by the access panels, marks by the walkways and at the entry points to the systems. Kits usually carry only the national and personal insignia; it is this kind of marking that finally gives the surface its scale and its sense of being lived in. The extent of the sheet and the kit it is intended for are given in the instructions from the manufacturer.
Work on a smooth glossy surface; on a matte coat a white haze remains around the carrier film. Cut the lettering out close to the edge, soak it in lukewarm water and let it rest until it will slide off the paper. Transfer it to a dampened spot, fine-tune the position and blot the surplus water away with a soft cloth. A decal softener settles the film into the panel lines and over the rivets; it is applied in a thin layer and the decal is not touched again until it has dried. Finally, take a coat of varnish over the surface to even out the sheen.
