Omask 1:48 masks for the Bf 109 G-14

A set of masks takes the place of covering by hand with tape as well as of working with a decal. The parts are machine cut exactly to shape, so the most tedious part of painting, that is, cutting out and tamping down the edges, is done away with. After spraying and removing the mask an edge stays behind that nobody could make twice over the same way freehand. The set is listed for the Bf 109 G-14 version in 1:48 scale.

What to watch out for when spraying

What matters is how well the edge adheres. The mask has to bed down over its whole area, otherwise paint will get under it during spraying and the edge will be blurred. There are three most common causes of bleeding: dust or grease on the base, too generous a first layer and spraying at an angle under the edge of the mask. The remedies are as simple as the causes. Wipe the surface with alcohol before sticking the mask on, make the first layer a mist only and hold the airbrush perpendicular to the surface. Lowering the pressure helps as well, because spray applied close up at a lower pressure will not get under the edge.

Usage tips

Carry the cut parts with tweezers and press them down with a toothpick along the whole perimeter. Let the paint only set and remove the mask by pulling it back over itself, not perpendicularly upward; that prevents a piece of paint being torn away. Once the paint has fully cured, run a sharp scalpel around the edge of the mask so that the layer separates cleanly. Wipe the adhesive residue away with alcohol on a cotton swab and let the area dry completely before the next spraying.
