About product

A Jumo instead of a Daimler

The letters A and D mark the very beginning of the Bf 109 fighter's career. Both of these machines were still powered by the Junkers Jumo 210 with a propeller of smaller diameter, they had angular faceted glazing and a low fin. The A went through its combat trial in Spain with the Condor Legion, while the Dora served with night squadrons and training units even in the first months of the war with Poland. Against the later Emils both forms look slimmer and old-world. Not many models of the early 109s have been made, which makes it all the more a shame to spoil them with shaky frames.

Covering on both sides

The die-cut sheet covers the framing from outside and from within. The inner part is the essential one on a model with an open cockpit: without it the view into the cockpit stays broken by shiny plastic where metal structure should be. The two sets of shapes sit side by side on the sheet and differ in outline, so they cannot be confused.

Applying the parts

Release the shape with the tip of a scalpel, carry it onto the glazing and let it bond under finger pressure through a sheet of smooth paper. Seat the sharp corners last. Spray perpendicular to the surface; an oblique coat pushes paint under the edge and the line smears.

What to avoid

Do not leave the film on the model for more than a few days and do not expose it to direct sunlight. The adhesive hardens over time and may then take a piece of the paint with it during removal. Drying speeded up with hot air has the same consequence, so let the coats dry at room temperature. Once you have taken the shapes you need, return the sheet to its wrapper lying flat; the leftover pieces come in handy for covering wheels or for small paint repairs.

FAQ

The sheet carries two sets of shapes. One is applied to the outer surface of the cockpit, the other inside, so the frames come out in color even when the cockpit is viewed open from within.

No. The shape of the glazing changed on the later versions, and on the Friedrich and the Gustav the cockpit looks different. The set is cut precisely for the early form with angular framing.

Pointed tweezers or a scalpel to release the shape from the backing and a toothpick to press the corners down are enough. Nothing else is needed.

Leave it in the original wrapper lying flat, away from heat and light. A bent sheet is harder to peel and the fold prints through into the shapes.
