Masking set for the Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 in 1:48 scale. It covers the cockpit glazing outside and inside and adds one sheet of national insignia masks and a decal sheet.

The E-3 version bore the main weight of the fighting over France and over the English Channel. You will recognize it by the angularly framed glazing of the cockpit and by the Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine with direct fuel injection. The injection had a direct effect in combat: under a sudden transition into negative g the powerplant did not cut out, whereas the carburetor engines of the period ran out of fuel supply at that same moment. The armament consisted of a pair of machine guns above the engine and a pair of wing cannons, the layout that stayed with the type until the switch to the heavier weapons of the later batches.
It is not the mask that fights for a sharp edge but the surface beneath it. Lay a smooth gloss base on the part therefore and let it cure hard. On a gloss film the die-cut shape seats over its whole area, so thinned paint has no way of bleeding under the edge. Gloss also gives away every speck and greasy mark before the builder seals it under a covering coat. A coat that has dried matte does exactly the opposite: a network of channels is left between the peaks of the grains and the paint wicks along them within the first minute. Betting on gloss pays off during later polishing as well, because a film that is lifted off leaves a flat surface behind it without a burr.
