A masking sheet for the Emil, that is the Bf 109E-3, in 1:48 scale. The framed canopy can be covered from outside as well as inside, and two marking masks complete it. Die-cut for the Hasegawa model.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Emil has one property that later versions lost: its heavily framed canopy does not slide to the rear but hinges to the side like a door. Collectors therefore often glue it open, and at that moment the whole inner side of the canopy is turned toward the viewer.
An open canopy is a test of the honesty of a build. Frames painted only from outside give away the bare clear plastic on the reverse and the illusion of a metal structure falls apart. The set reckons with that: it offers two parts for the glass, one corresponding to the view from above and the other to the reverse, so each side gets its color with a sharp edge.
Two masks of the national markings belong with them. The cross marking on this aircraft stretches across edges and rivets, where a decal likes to lift its margins, whereas a sprayed area seats without bubbles.
The Bf 109E-3 was the main type of the fighter units in 1940, with a DB 601 engine and cannon in the wing. Over the Channel it met Spitfires and Hurricanes and its angular canopy is one of the most recognizable parts of the whole machine.
The flat armored glass set in the middle of the windscreen and the small triangular windows on the sides call for attention as well. It is exactly these small areas that tend to be the first place where paint bleeds during hand masking, because tape cannot be trimmed precisely in such a small field. With a die-cut shape that problem disappears.
The sheet is cut for the model of the Hasegawa brand in this scale. Neither a kit nor paints are enclosed with it; it is a separate accessory.
