A set of masks for the Finnish version of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 in 1:48 scale. It masks the canopy framing from both faces and adds one mask for the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Finnish Air Force received Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 aircraft during 1943 and put them into the last fighting over the Karelian Isthmus. The most successful Finnish aces flew them and the machines carried a blue insignia in a white field on the wings and the fuselage. It is precisely that insignia which makes the Finnish Gustav a good subject, because it differs from the German machines in both color and placement and forces a modeler to work accurately.
The box carries two masks for the cockpit canopy, that is one for the view from outside and one for the inner face, and one mask for the national markings. The film is cut to the outline of the frames, so cutting strips from tape and patching the corners both fall away. The work is thereby shortened from tens of minutes to a few, and the result is repeatable, which anyone building several machines of one unit side by side will appreciate.
A matte surface fails under a mask more often than any other, and there is a physical reason for it. Matting is achieved by adding fine particles that break up the reflection. From the adhesive's point of view the surface is then rough and channels are left between the peaks. Thinned paint wicks into them and creates blurred edges under the rim of the mask that can no longer be cleaned up. The safeguard is simple: a gloss intermediate layer goes onto the place under the mask, the mask is pressed down with a fingernail along the whole length of the edge and the first pass is only a light, sealing one. Only once this thin layer has filled any gap is the paint laid on at full strength.
