This item is not a conventional plastic model but a kit of plastic bricks from the Polish maker COBI. The parts are made of colored plastic and join by clipping together, so the bomber comes about by building according to numbered instructions. The 1:48 scale given in the name means a genuinely sizeable model on a four-engine aircraft, one that works in a display case or on a shelf as the centerpiece of a collection.
The B-17 Flying Fortress was an American four-engine heavy bomber and, together with the Liberator, the most important machine of the daylight bombing campaign over Europe. The B-17F version differed from the older forms mainly in the frameless nose glazing, modified propellers and a range of small production changes; it was exactly this version that the American formations relied on in the hardest period of 1943. The power came from Wright Cyclone radial engines and the defensive armament consisted of .50 caliber machine guns in several positions, which is where the nickname flying fortress comes from. Experience of head-on attacks by German fighters led to the following B-17G version receiving a chin turret. B-17F machines flew by day, in large formations and without fighter escort for the whole route, which made their operations one of the most demanding chapters of the air war.
The instructions lead the build in steps from the fuselage to the wing, the engine nacelles and the landing gear. Before starting it pays off to sort the parts out and to build on a flat surface, which on a large model is a noticeable saving of time. The finished aircraft is strong and will take ordinary handling. The joints stay demountable, so the model can be dismantled and built again. Given its span, we recommend setting space aside for it in a display case in advance. Dust can simply be swept off with a soft brush.
