A sheet of masks for the Canadair Sabre F.4 in 1:48 scale: outlines of the outer cockpit frames plus discs for the wheel centers, tuned to the Airfix moldings.
Responsibility details are not available.
When Britain needed to put something equal up against swept-wing jet fighters at the start of the 1950s, it reached for an American type built under license in Canada. The machines assembled in Montreal were given the name Sabre F.4 in British designation and over four hundred of them arrived. They were the very first aircraft of the Royal Air Force able to exceed the speed of sound, even if only in a dive.
They served mainly with squadrons stationed in West Germany, where they filled the gap between the first home jet types and the arrival of the Hunter. After a few years they were handed on to further countries, which operated them for a long time afterward. Modelers are drawn by their bare metal finish supplemented by bands on the fuselage and the wing.
On this machine the front and side parts of the canopy form one uninterrupted whole, so the outline of the frame is long and without corners where tape could be joined. The pre-shaped parts follow it in one piece. They are taken off with tweezers, ideally while the varnish is not yet cured right through.
The sheet is prepared to the moldings with which Airfix represents the Sabre in this scale. The name speaks of outer masking; besides the cockpit, covers for the wheel centers are enclosed. With a glossy metal surface a sharp transition on the frame shows even more than with matte camouflage.
A surface in the shade of polished aluminum tends to be sensitive to fingerprints, so after unmasking the model is held by the landing gear or in a cotton glove. The canopy frames on this type are usually painted in the same metal tone as the neighboring panels, so it is useful to mask them only after the metal has been applied.
