The accessory represents a street water pump in an urban form in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft - it is a small diorama object that is added to a finished scene. Pumps of this kind stood at street corners, by paved squares and in the yards of tenement houses, so it will complete built-up surroundings and an alley with a vehicle alike.
The best place for a street pump is by a wall, at the edge of the paving or by a curb - that is, where it does not get in the way of traffic but is within reach. In a small scale such a detail can fill out an empty corner of the board that would otherwise look unfinished. Around the foot it suits to suggest paving, a drainage channel or a small puddle; water is precisely what explains a pump in a scene. With the other elements of the same series - a wall, stone paving or a lamp - it makes up a coherent street view.
Wash the casting in water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off and apply a primer, best a darker one, because cast-iron pieces tended to be painted a saturated color. Apply the base thinly, so that the relief does not disappear. The look of cast iron arises from a combination of a dark base, very fine metallic drybrushing along the edges and a dark wash into the hollows; bare metal shows only where a hand or a vessel touched the structure. Water in a puddle can be built up from several thin coats of a clear gloss medium over a dark ground; each coat has to dry, or it will stay milky. Bring out the wet surroundings with gloss varnish only in a narrow strip beneath the outlet, and leave the rest of the area matte.
