A 1:48 decal sheet with twelve markings for the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat carrier fighter from the fighting in the Pacific in 1944 and 1945.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat came about as a direct answer to the experience of the first months of the war with Japan. The F6F-5 version was the most numerous and technically the most mature: it received a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine in a more powerful form, a canopy without the side glazing panels and a strengthened wing able to carry unguided rockets or bombs. From the autumn of 1944 it formed the backbone of the fighter squadrons on the fast carriers and escorted raids as far as the Japanese home islands.
The set covers twelve particular machines, each from a different unit and from a different ship. Side by side stand Hellcats from the decks of Hancock, Yorktown, Hornet, Randolph, Enterprise, Princeton, Monterey, Lexington, San Jacinto, Cowpens, Bennington and Essex. Most of them are classic fighter squadrons, but the fighter bomber squadron VBF-12 of 1945 is here as well, from the time when some of the fighter units switched to attacks on ground and shipping targets.
The subjects carry a uniform gloss sea blue finish on which the white tactical numbers on the fuselage and on the engine cowling stand out. The range of numbers runs from one through ninety-nine up to number 129, so a single set can be used to build quite a sizable group of models from the same period without the markings repeating. This is the second part of the line and the subjects do not overlap with the first part.
The base deserves a gloss coat. It is precisely with a deep blue finish that the silvery edge around the carrier film appears most easily on a matte surface. Once dry, a decal softener helps the markings follow the rivets and the panel lines, and a final coat of clear evens everything out.
