About product

De-icing boots on the tail surfaces of the B-24D and B-24J Liberator, masks 1:48

This is neither a kit nor parts of the aircraft but a very targeted accessory: pre-cut MH models masks for spraying the dark de-icing boots on the leading edges of the tail surfaces of a Liberator model in 1:48 scale.

What it was on the real aircraft

A de-icing boot is a flexible cuff on the leading edge that rids itself of ice by inflating. On a model it shows as a dark strip following the outline of the leading edge, that is, an area of constant width running along a rounded profile. That is precisely the hard part of masking by hand, because tape puckers on a curve and the width of the strip wanders.

Why a pre-cut mask pays off

The mask has a shape derived from the particular part, so once it is applied it follows the edge without folds and without guessing the width. The result is symmetrical on both surfaces, which is the key with a detail of this kind, because an asymmetrical boot is noticeable on a finished model at once, even if the build is otherwise flawless.

How to proceed

Spray the boot only onto a finished, dried base coat. Seat the mask, press it down through a soft cloth and close the edge by spraying over it with the base color. Apply the dark paint in thin coats so that no ridge forms at the edge. After removing the mask, let the paint cure and only then move on to matte varnish and weathering, because rubber boots tend to be matter than the surrounding metal, so there is good scope for work there. The masks are cut to fit the Monogram and Revell kits.

Who the set is for

  • builders of four-engine bombers in 1:48
  • modelers who want symmetrical boots without measuring by hand
  • builds with the emphasis on small surface details
  • more experienced modelers working with an airbrush

The masks are cut for a particular kit in 1:48 scale, so check before you buy that it matches the model you are building. Paints and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They were flexible cuffs on the leading edges that rid themselves of ice by inflating. On a model they show as a dark strip following the outline of the edge.

According to the name it is focused on the tail surfaces. The extent of the sheet is not stated here.

On a rounded leading edge straight tape puckers and the width of the strip wanders. A pre-cut mask holds the shape and the symmetry of both sides.
