Four markings of Warhawks in 1:48 scale, from the prewar maneuvers in Louisiana through North African F version machines to a late N version in the Assam valley in India.
Responsibility details are not available.
The sheet brings together four machines with three years and half the globe between them. The oldest marking belongs to an E version with the 79th Squadron of the 20th Group as it looked at the great Louisiana maneuvers at the end of 1941. It was the last large exercise of the US Army before it entered the war and the machines on it carried conspicuous exercise markings.
The second and third markings head for North Africa in 1943 and both belong to the F version with a Merlin engine, which even a layman will recognize by the missing carburetor intake scoop above the nose. The first of them was flown by Colonel Earl Bates with the 79th Fighter Group, while the second served with the 57th Group, whose machines reached Africa by an unusual route.
It was the 57th Group that launched its Warhawks from the deck of the aircraft carrier Ranger, even though these were purely land-based machines with no arrestor hook. It was a way of getting fighter strength across the ocean faster than by shipping it in crates. The fourth marking then belongs to a late N version with the 88th Squadron of the 80th Group, which in 1944 operated over the Assam valley in India and over the Burmese border.
The set is printed and does not replace a kit. The E, F and N versions differ in the shape of the nose and in the height of the spine behind the cockpit, so choose a matching airframe according to the marking you select. The carrier film will take a gentle abrasive polishing of the surface, thanks to which its edge will not show once dry. Desert machines are moreover worth bleaching by the sun: a lighter cast on the upper surface will make the result more believable than a pure factory shade.
