This product is a decal sheet from the brand Xtradecal in 1:48 scale for a model of the de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth trainer biplane. According to the name, part one is devoted to military operators: the Fleet Air Arm and the air forces of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It is not a kit but separate decals — you have to obtain the model of the aircraft separately. How many particular machines the sheet covers and how detailed the technical lettering is are given in the instructions enclosed with the sheet.
The Tiger Moth was a single-engine biplane with two open seats in tandem, powered by the air-cooled de Havilland Gipsy Major inverted inline engine. It came about as a basic trainer with its typical staggered and swept-back upper wing, which made it easier to leave the front cockpit with a parachute. Thanks to its simple and durable structure it became one of the most widespread basic trainers of the British sphere, and its derivatives were flown by the air forces of many Commonwealth countries. A number of machines have survived to this day in airworthy condition.
On a biplane the greatest challenge is the ribbed fabric covering of the wings and the round roundels, which have to settle over the raised ribs. Apply the decals to a gloss varnish, therefore, use a stronger setting solution and let them soften — then press them down carefully with a cotton bud so that they follow the profile. Pierce bubbles with a pin and damp them again. Watch the fillets and the struts between the wings: lay the decals on, if at all possible, before you close the structure, or some places will be hard to reach. Finally even the surface out with a matte or satin varnish, depending on how well-kept a machine you want to show.
This is not a kit. The model, paints, glue and varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
