About product

Resin control surfaces for the Tiger Moth in 1:48 scale

This set from the Czech brand CMK replaces the control surfaces of a de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth biplane model in 1:48 scale with separate resin castings. The main benefit is twofold: a finer rendering of the fabric covering and the possibility of setting the surfaces deflected, as a parked aircraft with the controls free looks. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory to a model.

The real subject

The Tiger Moth had a design of the 1930s in which the tail surfaces and the ailerons were covered with fabric stretched over a light framework. On the real machine the drawing of the ribs, the slight sag of the covering between them and the tapes over the seams are therefore visible. In injection-molded plastic this surface can only be suggested to a limited degree and the leading edges stay thicker than they really are. On a biplane with an open structure that strikes the eye more than on all-metal types.

Building and painting tips

Cut the original surfaces off with a saw run as close as possible to the engraved division and level the cut with a file, so that a flat surface is created for the new part. Wash the resin castings and test the fit dry before gluing. Choose a restrained angle for the deflection; an exaggerated deflection looks unnatural and moreover complicates placing the model in a cabinet. Glue the control surfaces with cyanoacrylate glue and watch that the elevators are at the same angle on both sides. The fabric surface comes out once a primer has been applied: a base shade, a fine wash along the ribs and a slight lightening of the high points of the covering. A heavy wash, by contrast, swamps the whole effect.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Tiger Moth models in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to show the control surfaces deflected
  • Anyone interested in a faithful fabric covering on the tail surfaces and ailerons
  • More experienced modelers used to cutting into kit parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The rudder, elevators and ailerons, that is the moving surfaces by which an aircraft is flown. The set offers them as separate resin parts instead of parts cast in one piece with the tail surfaces and the wing.

Yes, with sets of this type that is the usual procedure. Run the cut as close as possible to the engraved division and level the surface with a file, so that the new part seats without a gap.

Restrainedly. A parked aircraft with the controls free tends to have the surfaces only slightly drooped; an exaggerated angle looks unnatural and takes away from the credibility of the model.

The number of parts is stated on the packaging of the set. The extent matches the control surfaces of a model in 1:48 scale.
