A decal sheet in 1:48 scale from the brand OWL for plastic models of the twin-engine bomber Dornier Do 17 Z-2. The markings correspond to the machine with the code F1+HH from the bomber wing KG 76. The sheet is neither a kit nor a part of a model but an accessory that replaces the decals from the box and makes it possible to build a model of one particular aircraft.
The Do 17 was a German twin-engine bomber with a very slender fuselage, which earned it the nickname the flying pencil. The Z version was the last large production series of the type and differed from the older forms in a deepened forward part of the fuselage with extensive glazing and in radial engines. The Z-2 form was the most numerous variant of the series and served with bomber units in the first years of the war. The letter and figure before the cross make up the code of the unit, while the characters after it identify the particular aircraft and its flight.
The surface under a decal has to be smooth and glossy; on matte varnish air holds under the film and a dulled patch then frames the character. Degrease the area, hold the decal in lukewarm water only briefly and let it slide off the paper backing into place. For settling onto curved areas and into engraved panel lines, use a softener in several thin coats and leave the decal alone between them. Once it has dried perfectly, go over the area with clear varnish, which will unify the gloss and hide the edges of the film.
