A pair of pre-cut masking films for the glazing of the Dornier Do 215B-4 reconnaissance bomber in 1:48 scale. One template wraps the frames of the glazed nose and the cockpit from outside, the other covers the same areas from within. The dimensions match the kit from ICM.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Do 215 came about as the export variant of the Do 17Z bomber. The original order was to go to Sweden, but before the machines could be delivered the war began and Germany kept them for itself. The essential change against the pattern was inverted V12 Daimler-Benz 601 engines instead of radials, which added to the aircraft's speed and range. The version designated with a four was adapted for long-range reconnaissance: it received photographic equipment and flew over the British Isles, the Balkans and over Soviet territory in the first months of the eastern campaign. Hungary acquired a few examples. The characteristic feature of the type remained the extensively glazed nose, in which almost the whole four-man crew sat together, a typical approach in the German school of bomber design.
It is that nose that makes building a model of the Dornier a test of care. There are many frames, they meet at various angles and the individual panels are tiny. Cutting them from tape means hours of work, and a few uneven lines will appear all the same. A machine-cut template shortens this part of the build to a few minutes and keeps the width of the frame uniform across the whole nose. It pays to work from the largest areas to the smallest and to press the edges down with a wooden stick rather than a fingernail.
