A set of cut masking stencils from the Eduard brand in the TFace version for a model of the Do 217K-1 bomber in 1:48 scale. Unlike the basic sets it covers the glazing from the outside and from the inside, so the frames come out sharp on both sides.
The inside of the cockpit is sprayed in a different shade from the outside on glazed noses. When masking is done only from the outside, the frames show through the glass in the wrong color and the illusion falls apart at exactly the place the viewer looks at first. A second set of stencils for the inner side removes that problem. The stencils are cut in kabuki tape, which shapes well into curves and leaves no adhesive behind when lifted off. The set thereby saves time and nerves: cutting frames out of tape with a knife means dozens of accurate cuts on complex glazing, and every one of them can scratch the clear part.
The Do 217K-1 was a night bomber with a new, continuously glazed nose without a stepped front to the pilot's cockpit. It is precisely that extensive area of glazing that makes masking the most tedious part of the build on this machine, and the stencils cut it to a fraction of the time. The K version followed on from the older rendition of the same type and differed from it in exactly the front part of the fuselage; it entered service in 1942.
