Eduard 1:48 Do 335A TFace masking set

This item is not a kit but an accessory for a model. It is a set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the Dornier Do 335 A in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. The templates bound the cockpit frames, so that after spraying a sharp transition is left between the frame and the clear area and the glazing stays transparent.

What the designation TFace means

With the letters TFace Eduard marks the masking sets that hold templates for both faces of the glazing, that is outside and inside. That comes in useful when the inside of the cockpit frames is to be painted in a different color from the outside, which is common with cockpits that have a glazed inner structure. The basic form without the TFace designation deals only with the outer face, which is why the two variants for the same aircraft exist side by side.

The real subject

The Dornier Do 335 A was a German twin-engine fighter of the end of the Second World War. Its arrangement of propulsion was unusual: one engine with a tractor propeller in the nose and a second with a pusher propeller behind the cockpit, joined to the propeller by a long shaft. That gave it the performance of a twin-engine machine without the asymmetric thrust that otherwise goes with twin-engine aircraft.

Masking tips

• Wash the clear part before sticking them on and let it dry completely
• Lay the masks down with tweezers and press the edges with a soft stick
• Stick the inner masks on before you glue the part into the fuselage
• Spray the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat runs under
• Peel the mask off shortly after the coat dries, at a shallow angle
