The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is an American single-engined carrier attack aircraft with a delta wing and one jet engine. It arose from a specification that went against the fashion of the time: to be as small and as light as possible. That succeeded so well that the aircraft fitted onto a ship's elevator without a folding wing, which is an exception on a carrier machine. The A-4C version belongs to the earlier batches of this long family.
Photo-etched parts from metal sheet which replace or supplement the details of the plastic kit. A photo-etched part can do what injection-molded plastic cannot: hold a thickness below a tenth of a millimeter, so that grilles, stiffeners, panels and small linkages look correctly thin in miniature. The set is cut for the A-4C kit from HobbyBoss in 1:48 scale. The extent of the parts and their position are described in the instructions from the maker of the set.
Separate the parts with a sharp knife on a hard surface, not with nippers, which will bend a photo-etched part. Make the bends exactly on the marked engraving, best in a bending tool or between two blades; the metal will not take repeated bending back and forth and will crack at the fold. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied drop by drop from a wire; on larger areas a slow-setting epoxy helps, because it buys time for seating the part. Degrease the metal and apply a primer before gluing and before painting, otherwise paint will not hold on smooth sheet. Where a photo-etched part is to go, the original plastic detail usually has to be sanded away according to the instructions.
For modelers with experience of fine work who want to take a kit beyond the level of the contents of the box. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
