Eduard F-105D Thunderchief 1:48, a set of painting masks

This is a set of self-adhesive painting masks, cut from Japanese kabuki tape, from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale. The masks serve for precise and clean spraying of the frames of the canopy glazing and usually of the wheel hubs on a plastic model of the F-105D Thunderchief. It is neither a kit nor decals but an aftermarket accessory for painting that is used while building the matching model. The model itself is obtained separately.

The real subject

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief was an American single-engine supersonic fighter-bomber. The single-seat F-105D version became the main strike aircraft of the US Air Force in the first years of the war in Vietnam. It was a large and heavy machine with an internal bomb bay, able to carry a considerable load of bombs.

Use

• The masks are lifted from the backing sheet and stuck onto the clear canopy glazing according to the shape of the frames.
• The transitions are pressed down so that paint does not seep under the edge, and the area is sprayed with an airbrush.
• Once dry the masks are lifted off; kabuki tape holds its shape and leaves no adhesive.
• Masks for the wheel hubs are usually included, for easy separation of the tire from the rim.
