A decal set for models of the F-14A Tomcat in 1:48 scale in the markings of the VF-84 Jolly Rogers squadron, in the extended version of the sheet from HAD models.
Responsibility details are not available.
A separate decal set for models of the Grumman F-14A Tomcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. This is the extended version of the sheet, that is a supplemented variant of an earlier release. It is not a kit; the Tomcat model has to come from another box. HAD models is a Hungarian maker of decals and modeling accessories.
The Grumman F-14A Tomcat was a two-seat carrier fighter of the US Navy with a variable-sweep wing and a pair of TF30 engines. Its main task was the long-range defense of a carrier group. The VF-84 Jolly Rogers squadron was among the most strikingly marked units in the whole Navy, because it carried a skull and crossbones on a black field on the fins and on the fuselage. Its machines from the deck of the aircraft carrier Nimitz appeared in the 1980 war film The Final Countdown, which the name of the set refers to, and markings from that time remain among the most sought-after subjects among builders of Tomcats.
The large black and white markings on the fins are the most demanding part of this scheme. Smooth the base perfectly first and varnish it with gloss varnish, so that no matte shadow is left under the film. Dip the decal in lukewarm water, slide it into place with a brush and adjust the position before the adhesive starts to set. A decal softener will settle it into the engraved lines and over the rivets; it is applied to the surface and the decal is left untouched until it dries. Finally unify everything with semi-gloss varnish.
