An extensive sheet 1:48 for the Belgian F-16AM FA-87 in the tiger finish for the Tiger Meet of the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Belgian No. 31 Squadron has carried the nickname Tigers since the 1950s and is among the fixtures of the international meet of tiger units. For the 2011 and 2012 editions its Fighting Falcon with the fuselage number FA-87 received a finish that covered practically the whole airframe with the artwork of tiger fur, including the head of the beast on the forward part of the fuselage. Machines conceived like that appear for only a few months and tend to be the main attraction of every meet.
The artwork runs across the whole surface of the aircraft, and so the film takes up a substantially larger area than with an ordinary display finish. Besides the fur pattern itself the sheet contains the national insignia, the fuselage number, the unit badges and the technical lettering, which has to lie over the pattern, not under it.
The cut corresponds to single-seat Fighting Falcon kits in 1:48 scale. The base paint has to be perfectly smooth, because a continuous area of film will betray even a small flaw in the surface.
Reckon with several sittings. Divide the fuselage into sections and let the film dry in each one before you start on the neighboring one. Check the joining of the pattern against the light while it is still wet, when a piece can be moved. Dose the softener sparingly; on large areas it can wrinkle the pattern. Apply the sealing varnish only after it has dried completely, and rather in three thin layers. Let the finished work rest for at least a day and only then fit the stores, the antennas and the other protruding small parts. Until then the risk of brushing against fresh film is needlessly high.
