Stencils for spraying the national markings of the F-35A Lightning II in 1:48 scale. The model the insignia are cut for follows from the name of the item. Current combat machines carry their insignia in subdued shades that differ from the base finish by only a few tones. A decal with such markings does have a thin film, but even that creates a slight sheen on a matte surface, and a difference that is meant to be barely noticeable suddenly jumps out. Spraying through a stencil gets round that problem, because the insignia is created directly in the paint.
The F-35A is the land-based version of the Lightning II family, built for a conventional airfield. It carries a radar with electronic beam steering, an electro-optical system under the nose and a set of cameras that projects a view of the surroundings straight into the pilot's helmet visor. The weapons disappear into internal bays in the fuselage so as not to increase the radar signature, and only for tasks where concealment does not matter are pylons added under the wing. The exterior finish consists of several close gray shades and the markings have to fit into them.
Mix the insignia from the same base shade as the finish and merely shift it a step darker or lighter. Spray dry from a greater distance and more thinly than you are used to; a heavy coat creates a step at the edge that is more conspicuous with subdued markings than with a sharp colored insignia.
