The canopy, wheels and EOTS head of the carrier version of the Lightning II are covered by 1:48 F-35C Canopy, Wheels And EOTS Paint Mask Set For Kitty Hawk Lightning II. The sheet deals with the inner and the outer side of the glazing.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet of pre-cut masks deals with the three places that hold you up most when painting a modern fighter: the cockpit glazing from the inner and the outer side, the tires of the landing gear wheels and the angular head of the electro-optical targeting system under the nose. The shapes match the parts of the kit in 1:48 scale. The set thus covers the whole preparation for spraying.
The inner shapes protect the canopy while the shade of the pilot's compartment is sprayed, the outer ones while the gray is applied to the fuselage. The wheel masks separate the rubber tire from the rim, so tracing by hand with a brush falls away. On the real machine the EOTS head has a different surface character from the surrounding skin, and the mask marks it out without lengthy trimming of tape. Everything is on one sheet, so nothing gets lost between several of them.
Spray the frame of the canopy first with the interior color and only then with the exterior shade; the transition will then come out sharp even on a curved area. Let the tape rest a while after sticking it on, so that it conforms to the surface, and take it off before the paint fully hardens. With the wheels it helps to spray the rim before the mask is stuck on, because no further layer will get under it afterwards. Lay the small shapes out on a mat in advance, in the order in which you will stick them on.
