A metal replacement part for models of the F-4 Phantom II aircraft in 1:48 scale, cut for the versions with the longer nose. The versions covered are the F-4E, F-4F, F-4G and F-4EJ, and with them the reconnaissance variants RF-4B, RF-4C, RF-4E and RF-4EJ. The position of the part on the model and the fitting procedure are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Projecting, thin shapes are the weak point of every plastic part. A mold needs a certain minimum thickness, after gluing a joint is left to be sanded, and the surrounding detail is lost with it. A metal part is one piece, holds a sharp edge even once painted and stands up to being touched when the model is carried from the display case to the table. In the large 1:48 scale, where a model is examined close up, that shows.
First try the part dry following the instructions and adjust the fit on the plastic, not on the metal. Before gluing, degrease the metal with alcohol and make the joint with cyanoacrylate; cement for polystyrene does not work here. Apply paint only over a thin layer of base, otherwise it will rub off easily on the smooth metal. Leave the fitting to the end of the build, when you will no longer be sanding the model.
For the modeler who is building one of the later versions of the Phantom in 1:48 scale and wants to improve a place where plastic is necessarily thicker than reality. The job is quick, needs no cutting into the fuselage and even a less experienced builder will manage it.
