1:48 F-4E Phantom II National Insignias And Marking is a set of masking templates for the national insignia and the markings. Instead of a decal being stuck on, the insignia is sprayed straight onto the airframe of a model. The set is intended for the Meng kit.

The set from the manufacturer Dead Design does not belong among cabin masks. It serves so that the national insignia and the other markings can be sprayed onto a model, not stuck on. The template is laid onto a painted airframe, the color of the insignia is applied through it, and after it is taken off an insignia that is a part of the finish is left. It is an accessory to a kit of the F-4E, not a model. It is based on the dimensions of the Meng kit.
That is the main difference against a decal. A decal sits on a transparent carrier film, which overhangs the outline of the insignia and on a flat or semi-gloss finish creates a glossy shadow. Modelers call it silvering and it is one of the most frequent faults of finished models. A sprayed insignia has no film, it lies straight in the paint and its edge is just as flat as the area around it. The clear coating under a decal and the clear coating over it are done away with as well.
The base has to be smooth and completely cured, otherwise the mask will tear the paint off. Lay the template down, check its alignment against the panel lines and press the edge down thoroughly. Apply the paint in thin coats and rather straight on from above, so that it does not run under the border. With multicolored insignia the spraying is done one after another, from the lightest color to the darker one, and between the layers the finish has to be left to dry. Take the mask off as soon as the paint goes tacky.
