About product

BASIC masking set for the F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel V in 1:48

A masking set in Japanese kabuki paper for an F-4G Phantom II model in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of an airplane but an accessory for painting: the templates are cut to the outline of the parts, stuck onto the clear cockpit canopy and, once sprayed, leave frames with a sharp edge. On the tandem cockpit of the Phantom that is a marked saving of time.

The BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT grades

New Ware grades its masking sets by scope. BASIC is the basic grade with the smallest scope, aimed at the glazing. ADVANCED has a wider reach. EXPERT is the most comprehensive and is aimed at modelers who want to spray even the small details instead of brushing them. The grades are not combined - a higher one usually covers the scope of the lower one as well, so one set is bought according to the level of detail required.

For this model BASIC is the option with the smallest scope: it covers the glazing and suits builders who mask the rest with ordinary tape.

The real subject

The McDonnell Douglas F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel V is a two-seat version of the Phantom adapted for suppressing ground radar defenses. It came about by converting F-4E airframes and carries equipment for finding sources of radar emission, with antennas in the nose and in a pod on top of the vertical tail. The tandem cockpit has a multi-part canopy, so masking the glazing is a longer job here than on single-seat aircraft.

Masking and spraying tips

Kabuki paper is soft and its adhesive has low tack, so a mask follows curved shapes and leaves no residue on the plastic once it is removed. Degrease the clear part beforehand and let it dry. Lift the template with tweezers, offer it up to the glass and press it down from the center outward with a soft stick; press the edges at the frames especially carefully, because that is where the paint seeps most often. Cover the rest of the glazing with masking tape and trim any surplus paper with a new blade on a mat rather than on the clear part. Spray thin coats and keep the gun perpendicular to the mask rather than at an angle under it; the first coat belongs to the shade of the cockpit interior. Take the masks off while they are still fresh, pulling back over themselves at a sharp angle.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the F-4G Phantom II model in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers for whom solving the glazing is enough and who mask the rest themselves
  • Beginners for whom the broken-up canopy of the Phantom is too much work
  • Anyone looking for the smallest grade of masking set for this type

The set contains masking templates only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is the smallest scope of masking set, aimed at the glazing of a model. The higher ADVANCED and EXPERT grades mask a wider range of parts and areas.

A thin Japanese paper with a low-tack adhesive. It follows curved shapes well, can be cut with a scalpel and leaves no adhesive residue on the plastic once removed.

No. It holds masking templates only. The kit, paints and glue have to be bought separately.

BASIC is enough if you mainly want to deal with the cockpit and can manage the rest with tape. ADVANCED and EXPERT have a wider scope and suit you when you want to spray the small details too.
