The D version came about by converting the day fighter into an all-weather interceptor. It lost its gun armament and the usual shape of the air intake, because radar took over the nose, and its striking power came from a retractable tray with twenty-four unguided rockets. The pilot flew alone and relied on the onboard fire-control system, which guided him onto the target and fired the salvo for him.
The set combines printed three-dimensional decals with photo-etched seat belts. The instrument panel, the side consoles and other surfaces of the pilot's compartment come as a raised layer on a carrier film; the dials have depth, glossy glass and color applied straight from the printer, so there is no need to color in the needles of the instruments one by one.
The transfer works differently from an ordinary decal: only the carrier paper is wetted with a sponge and a drop of detergent, the element is lifted off with tweezers and fixed with white dispersion glue. A softener must not be used, because it would buckle the relief, and the manufacturer does not recommend super glue. The base has to be smooth, clean and degreased. The metal belts are shaped with tweezers and fitted as the last step.
All the parts are cut to the shape of the parts of the kit in 1:48 scale. Once it is finished, the cockpit needs no further work and can be closed up straight away.
The sequence of steps is straightforward: spray the pilot's compartment in the base tone, transfer the printed parts onto a drop of dispersion glue and let them dry thoroughly. Only then is the metal added and the whole thing unified with a matte overcoat, which hides the edge of the carrier layer.
