The Vought F-8 Crusader was an American carrier fighter of the 1950s, which served with the Navy and the Marine Corps and saw combat in the Vietnam War. The most striking feature of the machine is the variable-incidence wing: on takeoff and landing the whole wing tilted upward, so that the aircraft flew at a high angle of attack while the pilot kept his view forward over the nose. The armament consisted of 20 mm cannons supplemented by short-range guided missiles, and it was precisely because of the cannon armament that the Crusader was nicknamed the last of the gunfighters. The F-8E version was among the later and best equipped variants of the line.
It is a fret of photo-etched parts in thin metal sheet for a model in 1:48 scale. Photo-etching gives the modeler shapes that injection-molded plastic cannot manage in the matching thickness: flat cockpit details, belts, covers, grilles and fine linkages. Which parts of the aircraft the set covers and which kit it is built for follows the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.
The parts are held in the fret by thin tabs. Cut them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not with scissors, which ripple the sheet, and level the remains of the tab with a fine file. Make the bends over a sharp edge or in a bending tool, always in one movement and along the marked groove. They are bonded with super glue applied in a tiny amount; cement for polystyrene does not hold on metal. Degrease the sheet before painting and spray a primer over it, otherwise the paint will wipe off the smooth metal.
A photo-etched fret is supplied. The kit of the aircraft, paints, glue and decals are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
