Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the two-seat Hornet in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. It is neither a kit nor a photo-etched accessory but an aid for painting that shortens the most tiresome part of the build: masking the cockpit accurately before spraying. This is the basic version, meant for the outer face of the canopy - anyone who wants to mask the inner face of the frames as well is looking for the version marked TFace, which is a separate item.
The framing of the Hornet cockpit is broken up, and cutting strips from masking tape by hand can easily take an hour of concentrated work, while a single crooked cut shows on the finished model forever. The masks are die-cut exactly to the shape of the part, so they are simply peeled off the backing, laid on the glass and pressed down. The result is a crisp frame edge of even width, which you would hit with hand-cut tape more by luck than by design.
Degrease the glazing first and let it dry thoroughly, otherwise the masks hold badly. Lay them with tweezers and press the edges down with a toothpick - that is where paint most often runs underneath. Spray thinly and in several coats so that no step forms on the edge. Once the paint is dry to the touch, take the mask off carefully at a shallow angle; waiting for full curing does not pay, as hard paint lifts away with the tape. A cotton bud moistened with water removes any adhesive residue.
The masks are a consumable accessory to a model, not a kit. The model and the paints are not included in the package.
