A set of masks for the naval Brewster in the F2A-3 version, 1:48. The clear parts are covered from both sides and two insignia masks are included. Cut for the Special Hobby kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The carrier Brewster had a glazed panel in the floor below the cockpit through which the pilot could watch what was happening directly beneath the aircraft. On the model it is a small clear part, but it sits where the fuselage is glued together during the build, and it tends to get flooded with glue or oversprayed before anyone remembers it.
It is worth treating as carefully as the main canopy. That is exactly why the principle of a mask for both faces is useful elsewhere than on top: on this type the inner face of the clear part turns into the cockpit, where the interior shade is applied, while outside the fuselage carries the blue-gray of the lower surfaces.
The envelope holds two shapes for the clear parts, dealt with separately from above and from below, and a pair of masks for the stars. American stars in a circle spray well, because weathering can be added once they are dry without the edge of a decal showing through it.
The F2A-3 version was the heaviest of the whole family, with a greater fuel load and additional armor. It served with naval units and, with Marine crews, went into action at Midway atoll, where it suffered heavy losses. Its squat fuselage and short wings give the model an unusually sturdy look.
It is sensible to set the small clear parts into the fuselage only after the interior has been painted, and to protect them throughout the build. Degreasing before the mask goes on matters even more with them than on large areas, because every fingerprint shows on a small field.
The cut is matched to the Special Hobby kit in 1:48 scale. The aircraft itself and paints do not belong to the set.
