An envelope of masking film for the F4F-4 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48. The cockpit outside and inside, two sets of national insignia masks and a sheet of printed marking.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Grumman F4F-4 brought the Navy two things that decided its usefulness: folding wings and six 12.7 mm machine guns. The folding raised the number of machines on a carrier deck by almost half, while the heavier armament took away range and rate of climb and pilots complained about it. Even so, it was this squat machine that held the line at a time when the more agile Zero stood against it, and the tactic of mutual cover in pairs made it an equal opponent.
A mask can do a solid area of one color. As soon as a marking has fine lettering, a multi-color drawing or a unit emblem with several shades over one another, spraying loses: every color would need its own coat and exact registration. Here a printed sheet is irreplaceable, and that is why the envelope carries both.
The frames of the Wildcat are narrow and a lot of them converge above the pilot's head. It pays to lay the masks down with flat-jawed tweezers and to leave the point of a toothpick only for pressing home. The set is worked out for the molding from Tamiya. Anyone who wants the wings folded should mask the cockpit before assembling the hinges. The fuselage is then more comfortable to hold and nothing presses on the finished glass.
