The F4F-4 version brought what carrier operations needed most: folding wings that turned back along the fuselage and saved room in the hangar below the flight deck. Six heavy machine guns went into the wings and the armor was strengthened, but the result was greater weight and a worse rate of climb than on the previous form. The landing gear still retracted by hand with a crank in the cockpit, which was an unforgettable experience for newcomers. It was exactly these machines that bore the brunt of the fighting at Midway and over Guadalcanal.
Before you set to work, let the gloss varnish under the decals mature for at least a day. A fresh surface is easily marked under damp paper. The Wildcat has a lot of riveted areas and screwed panels, so it pays to reach for a stronger decal softener and press the feature onto the surface with a cotton swab. Then wipe the excess adhesive away with a damp cloth, otherwise it will dry into glossy marks that can only be removed by varnishing over them.
