About product

F4F Wildcat 1:48, Eduard steel photo-etched seat belts

Pre-painted photo-etched seat belts from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for the cockpit of the carrier-borne Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter in 1:48 scale. It is a small but remarkably effective change: a cockpit with an empty seat looks unfinished even on an otherwise nicely built model, whereas belts draped loosely over the edge of the seat fill it at once. The belts are etched from steel, which is a substantial difference against soft brass etching, because steel holds its shape once bent, so the natural sag and waviness of the straps can be reproduced faithfully. The parts are pre-painted, so they do not have to be painted. This is not an aircraft model but an accessory for a kit.

The real subject

The Grumman F4F Wildcat was a carrier-borne fighter of the US Navy from the early 1940s, powered by the Pratt and Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engine. It was an all-metal monoplane with a barrel-shaped fuselage and landing gear retracted by hand. The cockpit was filled with fairly simple equipment in which the seat straps are among the most noticeable elements. In the first period of the war the Wildcat was the main type of the carrier fighter force.

Usage tips

Separate the belts with a sharp knife on a hard surface and handle them with tweezers, because a sweaty fingerprint shows on a pre-painted surface. Bend the buckles and clasps carefully; steel takes more than brass, but fine parts stay fragile. Let a belt wave and drape over the edge of the seat rather than lie straight across it, and the result will look alive. Glue with cyanoacrylate in a minimal amount laid on with the tip of a wire, so that it does not soak through to the face side. Do not spray over the parts, because the printing needs no paint; any lifting should be done only with a dry brush on the edges. Fit them before the fuselage is closed up.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of F4F Wildcat models in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to fill the cockpit without an extensive rebuild
  • Those who build the model with the canopy open
  • Beginners who want to try photo-etched parts on a small and easily managed set

This is an accessory to a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a small fret of etched seat belts for the cockpit of an F4F Wildcat plastic kit in 1:48 scale you already own.

The belts are etched from steel, not from brass. Steel holds its shape once bent, so the straps can be sagged and waved faithfully without straightening out.

You do not, because the parts are pre-painted. Do not spray paint over them, as it would cover the printing. A light dry brush on the edges is enough to lift them.

Before the fuselage is closed up, while the cockpit is still reachable. They are glued with cyanoacrylate laid on in a minimal amount.
