A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for masking the clear parts of a model of the Vought F4U-1D Corsair in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. It is neither a model of the aircraft nor decals but an aid that spares the modeler the most unpleasant part of a build, that is measuring and sticking strips of tape onto the narrow frames of the cockpit by hand. Double-sided means that the set covers the masking of the outer as well as the inner side of the glazing, so the frames can be sprayed in the interior color from the inside and in the final camouflage from the outside. The masks are cut to the outline of one particular kit. Because an identically named set is also made for a different manufacturer, we state it explicitly: the set is cut for the Tamiya kit and the shape of the frames need not fit the canopy of another kit.
The Vought F4U-1D Corsair was an American carrier fighter and fighter bomber of the Second World War, recognizable at a glance by its inverted gull wing. It was powered by the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine. The F4U-1D version differs from the earlier machines above all in its one-piece canopy with good visibility instead of the earlier heavily framed form and in the pylons under the center section for drop tanks and unguided rockets. It is precisely the clean canopy that makes masking the glazing a visible detail on this version, one that decides the final impression of the model.
First degrease the clear part and let it dry completely, because fingerprints under a mask show through later. Lift the individual parts off the sheet with pointed tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, seat them on the glass and push the air out from the center toward the edges. Press the edges down with a wooden toothpick so that the paint does not creep under them. Spray in several thin coats, because a heavy coat creates a step at the edge and peels when the mask comes off. Remove the mask while the paint is freshly dry, pulling it back over itself at a sharp angle. Wipe any adhesive residue off with lukewarm water.
This is an accessory set of masks, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
