This item is not a kit of an airplane but a set of photo-etched metal parts that complete a plastic model of the American carrier fighter F6F-3 Hellcat in 1:48 scale. Thin metal makes it possible to render components whose scale thickness is beyond the reach of injection-molded plastic, and so refines the places where a model gives itself away most to the eye. It is made by Eduard, a Czech company from Obrnice near Most, which has produced photo-etched accessories for a long time. It is a full photo-etched set, not a smaller set from the Zoom line. Check the actual contents of the package and the number of parts on the box of the set.
The F6F Hellcat was an American single-engine carrier fighter with a radial engine, a rugged structure and a wide landing gear track that retracted into the wing. The F6F-3 version was the first production variant of the type. The machine was designed with operation from aircraft carriers in mind, so it has a bulky fuselage, a large wing area and sturdy landing gear. On a model the details of the cockpit, the landing gear bays and the control surfaces are therefore clearly visible, that is exactly the places where photo-etched parts help.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and sand the tab down with a fine file. Make the bends over a straight edge or in a photo-etch bender, and hold tiny parts with tweezers whose tips have been smoothed. Cyanoacrylate glue or a slow-setting epoxy holds metal to plastic, while cement for plastic has no effect. Degrease unpainted parts before spraying and give them a base coat. On the plastic model, measure in advance how much material has to be sanded away so that the metal part does not enlarge the outline.
