Masking films for the cockpit of the Grumman F8F Bearcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. They cover the glazing from the face and from the reverse and are made for the box by the brand Academy.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designers were given a single requirement: to gain height as fast as possible. Around a proven radial engine they therefore built the smallest possible airframe, lightened it wherever they could, and the result was a machine that climbed faster than most early jet aircraft. The wing tips were deliberately designed to break off under g loading before the spar could be damaged.
The type missed taking part in the fighting of the Second World War by a few weeks. It did, however, become the first aircraft of the postwar aerobatic team of the US Navy, served with French units in Indochina and later in Thailand and South Vietnam. It survived longest in the air races in Nevada, where modified examples with uprated engines hold piston aircraft records to this day.
The glazing consists of a low teardrop cover and a windscreen with a fixed frame. The films follow their outline and are supplied for the outer and the inner side. They are applied to degreased and dry glass before the base coat is sprayed and, once it has dried, they are lifted with tweezers by a pull at a slant to the surface, so that they do not take the sprayed coat on the frame with them.
The machine itself has to be obtained separately, as the set holds films exclusively.
