This set from Quinta Studio brings a color-printed cockpit interior for the Fairey Fulmar Mk.I on decal paper. It is not an airplane kit but an accessory for a plastic model: it brings out the instrument panel, the side consoles and the rest of the cockpit fittings. The elements are already in color and fully modeled, so there is no picking out tiny instruments with a brush. The target kit is Trumpeter.
The Fairey Fulmar was a British carrier fighter of the Fleet Air Arm, designed as a two-seater with an observer who handled navigation over the open sea. It paid for that advantage with lower performance than single-seat fighters, but in return it offered long range, heavy machine gun armament in the wing and respectable endurance. Fulmars escorted convoys in the Mediterranean and on the run to Malta, and by the number of victories they were among the most successful British carrier fighters of their day. The long glazed canopy with two separate stations gives a color interior plenty of room to show on the finished model.
The best result comes from a clean, flat base, so first take the flash off the plastic parts and, if need be, spray them with a dark primer. Apply the elements one at a time and adjust the position while the piece can still be moved. Concentrate above all on the surfaces that stay visible through the canopy once the fuselage is closed, because that is where the effect is greatest. At the end it pays to unify the whole interior with a flat varnish and let it dry thoroughly before you move on to the next steps of the build.
