The A of the fifth series received an engine mounting lengthened by fifteen centimeters. The reason was the temperature at the rear of the powerplant, which the previous versions could ventilate only with difficulty. Moving the engine forward at the same time balanced the aircraft after the added armament and became the basis from which all the later variants with a wide range of field conversion sets grew.
Compared with the fighters of its time the Focke-Wulf had a fairly clean sliding canopy with few bars, and so a visitor at a show looks into its cockpit practically unobstructed. Above the pilot's head runs a longitudinal brace on which the mechanism for emergency jettison is mounted. At the rear sits an armor plate and above it a shaped headrest.
Ahead of the instrument panel stands a thick layer of bulletproof glass set in a metal frame. Outside, that frame carries the camouflage, inside a dark interior shade, and because it stands at right angles to the line of sight, both are visible at once on a model. A reverse mask makes it possible to do that division with a sharp edge instead of a smudge. Without it the armored glass looks like an ordinary transparent plate.
It is useful to know that the main part of the glazing on this machine could be jettisoned by an explosive cartridge. On a model it is therefore often built slid back on its rails, and a gap appears between it and the fuselage through which the pilot's space is visible from the side. In that position the reverse side of the frame ends up right in the viewer's line of sight.
