1:48 G4M1 Betty is a Dead Design masking set for the twin-engine Japanese naval bomber Mitsubishi G4M1 in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Of all Japanese machines in 1:48 scale the Betty is among the most demanding to paint as far as glazing goes, because it has unusually much of it and it is spread all over the fuselage. The masking set shortens this part of the build markedly and rids you of the most tiresome handwork with a fine brush.
The Betty was a long-range naval bomber built around an enormous fuel capacity: hence its exceptional range and the cigar-shaped fuselage to which the machine owes its nickname. It paid for it, however: the tanks were not self-sealing and the G4M1 caught fire after a hit so easily that it earned unflattering names from its own crews. It carried a torpedo as well as bombs, it served across the whole Pacific area, and its glazed nose with rounded panes is one of the most characteristic shapes of Japanese aviation.
Start with the forward glazed dome, because it is the largest and the hardest to reach: if you leave it until last, you will be handling an already finished model around it. The side observation blisters and the tail section have smaller pieces that are easily lost, so take them out only just before applying them. The fuselage is long, so take breaks between masking the individual sections and check whether the frames come out at the same height on both sides. Build the opaque coat up thinly, so that the fine bars do not disappear under the paint.
