A scenic accessory for dioramas in 1:48 scale. It represents a gas mask, that is a piece of personal gear that appears in a scene left on a bench, hung on a hook or lined up among the rest of the equipment. The accessory is not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle — it is a stand-alone object of a scene, with which an interior, an equipment store or the area around figures is completed.
A gas mask is a means of protecting the airways: a facepiece with eyepieces, to which a filter is attached either directly or by a hose. It was carried in a cylindrical case or a bag, so in a diorama it tends to be seen set aside and closed rather than worn. As a scenic element it is useful precisely because it is unmistakable — a viewer recognizes the character of the setting from it without any further explanation.
Cut the casting off the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, sand the cut back and wash the part in lukewarm soapy water before painting. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on resin parts — use cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Lay down a thin primer and paint with the differing surfaces in mind: the rubber part of the mask looks better matte, while the eyepieces will take a drop of gloss varnish, which in 1:48 scale stands in for glass better than any paint. A dark wash will bring out the transition between the mask and the filter, and a dry brush will pick out the edges of the case.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
