Stencils for the Gloster Gladiator Mk I reduced to 1:48. The cockpit masking is double, from outside and from inside, and so is the masking of the insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Gladiator entered service in the middle of the 1930s as the peak of British biplane fighter development. It had an enclosed cockpit, a reflector sight and four machine guns, two in the fuselage and two under the lower wing. When the fighting in the Mediterranean began, it was the only fighter equipment the defense of Malta had at hand. The aircraft came out of crates intended for carrier service, so they carried a strengthened fuselage and fittings for an arrestor cable.
In the summer of 1940 only a few dismantled aircraft intended for carrier service remained on the island. The mechanics assembled a small flight from them, which quickly came to be called after three virtues, and for weeks it took off against the numerous formations attacking from Italy. The finish was plain, the factory brown and green pattern and roundels, no showy unit markings. The legend of three aircraft is a simplification; in reality there were somewhat more of them and the machines were rotated, yet it has remained one of the strongest stories this type has.
Stencils hold best on a surface free of fingerprints, so before masking the model is rinsed in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and left to dry. The glazing pieces are laid on dry, pressed down from the center toward the edges and the edges are run over with a blunt wooden stick. More thin coats are applied rather than one heavy one; the paint then does not get under the edge. On a biplane it pays to work in sections, because the upper flying surface shields the lower one and the undersides would otherwise be left unsprayed.
