This set from Brengun holds photo-etched gunsight parts intended for the cockpits of models of combat aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory to a kit you have already bought, not an airplane model. It comes in wherever the cockpit is open or the canopy is clear and a plastic gunsight from the kit reads as a shapeless block.
A gunsight is a small but conspicuous part right in the line of sight into the cockpit. Injected plastic has a technological limit of thickness below which it cannot go, so the frame of the reflector glass and the mounts come out several times thicker than the scale would allow. Etched sheet is an order of magnitude thinner and seen from the side it gives the part the right silhouette. That is exactly why photo-etched parts are used in cockpits: they do not increase the number of details but correct their scale.
Cut the parts out of the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface, not with nippers, which will bend the sheet. Sand the remains of the cuts with a fine file. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two razor blades exactly along the marked score line. Degrease the metal with alcohol or acetone before gluing, otherwise neither primer nor paint will adhere. It is bonded with super glue applied in a minimal amount, best on the tip of a wire. The reflector glass of the sight can be imitated with thin clear film or a drop of clear varnish, or with super glue applied on the frame and left to dome. Painting should be done once the part is in place, over a primer intended for metal.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
