The set cast in resin from the maker CMK contains the control surfaces of the Hawker Sea Hawk carrier-based jet aircraft in 1:48 scale. An injection-molded kit usually has the ailerons, rudder and elevators molded in the neutral position; this set supplies them as separate parts that you turn during the build according to how you want to pose the aircraft.
The Sea Hawk is a single-engine carrier-based aircraft with a straight wing and a characteristic divided exhaust on the sides of the fuselage. A model standing on a base comes across as static; when the ailerons are deflected in opposite directions, the rudder turned a few degrees and the elevators drooped, the aircraft immediately looks as if it were parked with its controls free, which on machines on a deck corresponds to reality more often than perfect symmetry. The castings moreover tend to have more pronounced ribbing and a thinner trailing edge than can be produced from an injection mold.
The key step is cutting the original surfaces off the plastic parts. Run the cut just behind the hinge line with a fine saw rather than with a knife pulled by force, so that the thin plastic does not tear. Then level the edge with a file and abrasive paper on a board, so that it stays straight along its whole length. Next comes the dry test: lay the resin surface on without glue, check the gap along its whole length and the symmetry of the deflection on both halves of the wing. Wash the parts free of the release agent beforehand and cut the casting blocks off with a saw. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, which gives no time for correction, so test the position first and mark it with a pencil if need be. Sand resin wet or with a respirator.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
