This is a set of pre-cut masking templates in 1:48 scale for the Henschel Hs 129 B-2 attack aircraft. It is not a kit and not a resin accessory — it is a painting aid. The templates are lifted from the sheet with tweezers, stuck onto the glazing and the other areas that are to stay free of paint, and lifted off carefully once the finish is dry. That does away with the slow cutting of tape to follow the framing, which on the canopy of this type is complex. The target kit is from Hasegawa, Revell or Hobby 2000.
Masking a canopy by hand is the most common place where work on a model goes wrong: the knife slips along a frame, paint creeps under the tape or the finish peels when it is lifted. Pre-cut templates follow the shape of the parts, so the edges of the framing come out sharp and even across the whole canopy. Depending on the extent of the set, other circular and smaller areas such as wheels or position lights are masked as well. The exact extent of the sheet is stated on the packaging of the set.
The surface has to be clean, degreased and free of fingerprints. Lay the template on dry and press it down with a toothpick or a blunt wooden stick, above all around the edge: that is where paint most often creeps under. Spray in several thin coats and let each one flash off; a heavy wet coat always gets under the edge of the mask more easily. Lift the mask off while the finish is still fresh, drawing it along the edge at a shallow angle rather than straight up. Any adhesive left behind is removed with a cotton bud lightly dampened with water.
The set contains the masking templates only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Before buying, check that the templates match your particular kit.
