The Shturmovik was no pampered machine. It was built in hundreds of examples a month, often in makeshift halls beyond the Urals, and its finish matched that: coarsely applied, quickly rubbed away by mechanics' boots and, over the winter, gone over with a lime white that came off in strips in the spring. Anyone wanting to get that look onto a model has a sanding sponge, silver on the edges and several layers running one over another ahead of them.
And it is precisely here that a sprayed insignia wins. A star laid down with a decal sits on top like a sticker and at the first pass of a sponge it abrades differently from the paint around it, or is torn off entirely. An insignia that arose in paint through a stencil is part of the finish: lime white can be gone over it, wear can be rubbed into it, it can be sanded back and sprayed again.
Who it suits. Builders of heavily worn models who are tired of the way a decal breaks on a rough surface. Less benefit will go to anyone who builds cleanly and displays the finished piece without weathering.
Box contents. The glazing is handled from outside and inside, so the cover over the rear gunner can stay hinged open, and there are two insignia sets so that the star can be sprayed with its border as well.
What else to consider. White winter paint is applied over finished insignia, not under them. A stencil lets you spray the insignia, let it dry and only then go over it with thinned white, which you then partly rub away. With a decal this procedure does not work, because the carrier film under the white creates a visible outline.
