Masking set for the glazing and the national insignia of the Soviet Il-2M3 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. The canopy masks are applied outside and inside, and one set of insignia masks and supplementary decals are enclosed. Intended for the kit from Tamiya.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Il-2M3 grew out of the bitter experience of 1942. The single-seat version had the pilot hidden in an armored tub, but the tail section of the aircraft was defenseless against attack from behind and German fighters exploited that to the full. The designers therefore lengthened the cockpit, put a gunner with a large-caliber machine gun at the back and, on the later batches, swept the outer wing panels to the rear to balance the shifted center of gravity. It was this silhouette that became the most widespread form of the machine.
The gunner sat outside the armored shell, at first literally on a fabric strap, and losses in his position were many times higher than in the pilot's. Even so the two-seat variant was decisive: in the summer of 1943 it formed the backbone of attacks on German armored columns and its crews then scattered small shaped-charge bomblets on their targets for the first time. By the end of the war the whole family had become the most numerously built combat aircraft in history.
The masks are cut from self-adhesive film and follow the framing of the canopy. The outer parts cover the areas of glass during spraying, the inner ones prevent paint from pushing through from inside and the frame from looking untreated when you look into the cockpit. The set adds masks for the national insignia, so the red stars are sprayed straight onto the surface and there is no decal step to deal with.
