The line of fighters from the Yakovlev design bureau formed the backbone of Soviet fighter aviation during the Second World War. The Yak-1 was a single-seat fighter with a mixed airframe structure, the Yak-7 came out of a reworking of the trainer version, and the Yak-9 was its further developed successor with a greater proportion of metal in the structure. The Polish fighter units formed on the Eastern Front flew exactly these types, so their machines differed from the Soviet ones only in their national insignia and tactical numbers. For a modeler that means a Polish machine can be built from a commonly available kit by changing nothing but the decals.
Models of fighters of that period have a dense network of engraved panel lines and fabric surfaces with the structure of the ribs suggested, which a decal has to cross without wrinkling. That is what a softener is for. It is worked in two steps: a weaker product is applied to the glossy surface before the decal is laid down and improves adhesion, while a stronger one is brushed over the seated motif and the carrier film softens so that it follows the relief. Once it is on, do not move the decal and do not touch it, even when it wrinkles; the wrinkling is part of the process and the area levels itself out as it dries. If the film still arches somewhere once dry, pierce it in the hollow with a point and apply a second dose. Strong products can manage even a markedly profiled surface, but they can also dissolve a thin film, so test them on a surplus motif first.
